Lonely Planet: Afghanistan

April 1, 2008

I checked out a copy of Lonely Planet: Afghanistan from my local library. Just the thing for the traveler who’s already seen it all. Tuscany, boring. Las Vegas, a yawn. Perfect gift for the idealistic NGO employee or British princes.

Lots of interesting facts. There’s a ~$10 departure tax charged at Kabul Airport. Don’t take pictures of women without permission or else.

It’s hard to fathom that there is some normalcy even in a place like Afghanistan, but there is. There are several competing wireless communication providers, all operating on GSM. Like most developing countries, they pretty much skipped the wired phase of communications.

Good companion book – The World’s Most Dangerous Places
