Knife culture, violent women?

August 9, 2008

Does the UK have a “knife culture” problem? Apparently Scotland is more violent than England with regards to people being knifed, but is that surprising (America was founded in large part by Scots-Irish who had been born fighting). The government is publishing posters to get parents to stop their kids from taking knives from home.

Add to the knife problem the issue of violent women. Like in the US, crime committed by girls is apparently on the rise in the UK. Police are stretched to their resource limits by the rash of thuggish girls. What to blame for knives and fighting women? Drink, drugs, poverty, broken homes, machismo, declining morals? Or is it really a ‘problem’ but just normal for the culture, I don’t recall from literature that 19th century London was a particularly peaceful place.
