Iranian brain drain

August 14, 2008

It’s interesting to just reload the WordPress.com homepage and look at the featured new posts. Yes, lots of ranters out there, but some interesting things you wouldn’t have read about if you didn’t see it on that page.

Brilliant Iranian engineering students and John McCain have something in common. Both do not want to live in Iran. That’s probably the end of their commonalities (McCain being at the bottom of his Annapolis class probably didn’t carry around his slide rule).

Read the posting. Not everybody hates us yet, not even residents of an Axis of Evil founding member. Professors at elite schools who have to moonlight to survive (they can’t leave??) whereas if they were here they could get involved with some startups on the side and get rich. I didn’t see evidence of this idea, that maybe the oppressive nature of a theocratic government has something to do with not respecting the value of science? Could be a reflection maybe of the little battle in the US with fundamentalist Christians and their attitudes toward science <inserted-agenda-here/>.
