Brits have to pack their own sandwiches

September 12, 2008

Feeling the pinch of a reeling economy, Brits are toting lunchboxes to work, buying sliced ham and cheap loaves of bread at Aldi. You may be aware that the sandwich was a British invention, believed to be named from the Earl of Sandwich from the 18th century who would eat dinner with one hand and play cards with the other.

The London sandwich shops are numerous, with Subway from the US. in recent years making a splash. I have to imagine then that sales are down at those shops, and the fact that one shop chain publishes recipes for many of its sandwiches surely could not be helping.
