India wins gold at Olympics, accused of trafficking gold in the Congo

August 14, 2008

IndIa gained a national hero yesterday when it won its very first(!) gold medal in the modern Olympic Games for an individual sport. Unfortunately, Indian soldiers acting as UN peacekeepers in the Congo have been accused of trafficking in gold.

Unfortunately, that’s not the worst allegation against the Indian peacekeepers.

A UN statement on Tuesday said a probe had “revealed prima facie evidence” that the soldiers may have engaged in sexual exploitation and abuse.

One anonymous UN official said the case involved abuse of young girls and boys by at least 100 Indian peacekeepers over several years.
